Lovely Luxembourg
Lauren and I decided to include Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (capital city) as part of our journey through Europe this time around.
Luxembourg is known as the Gibraltar of the North. It is one of the few ancient “Walled Cities” still in existence. Its Old Quarters & Fortifications section of town was named a UNESCO site back in 1994.
The city has a distinct feel of being transported back to medieval times reminding Lauren of Estonia and me of Bruges. We stayed at the Hotel Vauban located on the city’s main square named Place d’Armes adding to the mythical ‘dungeons and dragons’ feel of our 24-hour visit.
Lauren and I lunched at Charles Sandwiches enjoying unique baguette sammies followed by delicious chocolates on the Grand Rue at Genaveh Chocolatiers, people watching and catching our breath.
We would need this rest (and fuel) as we prepared for our midday stroll of the town.
Our self-guided tour included the Bock Promontory and Casements, Chemin de La Corniche (elevated promenade offering stunning views of the city), Notre Dame Cathedral (almost every European city has one!), Grand Rue (pedestrian only shopping district), Palais Grand-Ducal, Adolphe Bridge and Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator providing stunning views of the city. Daily step count would approach ~ 18k.
Not gonna lie, the meals keep getting better and better.
We dined at the Michelin starred Restaurant Clairefontaine. Meats and cheeses, fishes and desserts, wines and cocktails, both beautiful and scrumptious. I must say, my traditional blue blazer is really getting a workout on this trip! Thank you, Chef!
Nightly pub crawl - Scott’s Pub. Not a typo. Slightly younger than me, this year the pub is celebrating 40 years. We exchanged travel backstories with Peter initially from Bulgaria. A fine and hospitable host.
As Lauren can attest, give me a few beers and I will converse with anyone.
Our last stop was Ennert de Steiler. The building dates back 1350. Since 1842, it has been The Steiler, the city's oldest pub. Ask for a tall, cold Bofferding beer, a local brand from Luxembourg's largest brewery. You won’t be disappointed.
Here we chatted with Marcus originally from Albania. He discussed his motherland with Lauren as that country could be possible a world travel destination for her and Brian in 2026. A lively conversation about life, family and travel destinations; some taken, some still planned were enjoyed by all.
While it’s certainly fun capturing the iconic landmark images and unique selfies traveling from place to place ultimately, it’s the locals, their traditions and unique culture that makes lasting impressions on you once you get back to the States. The travel experience leaves this writer with stories that will endure much longer than some T-shirt or trinket will ever hope to do.
In fact, Lauren and I have been doing just that on this trip. Reminiscing about trips gone by but not forgotten.
Hey Lauren, remember that time in London…….
Heading East.
Onward we go into this curious and unknown night. Our next adventure is still waiting to find us.
