Catskills Day #1 - Fun in the Gunks!
Road trip with our friends Sue Syd & Paul. Chasing fall foliage northern country up in the Hudson River Valley. Shawangunk Mountains (aka the Gunks). Hiked Sam’s Point and Ice Caves. Scenic byway along Rt. 52. Lunch at Tony & Nick’s in Ellenville. Dinner and funk/soul music at the Falcon in Marlboro. Enjoying two musical legends, same stage. Fred Thomas bassist with James Brown Band (1971-1975) and drummer extraordinaire Bernard Purdie (Purdie shuffle) played on Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan records and countless other recordings. Leaf peeping. Upstate New York State of Mind!
Catskills Day #2 - Exploring the “Original Garden”
Today we explored the original proposed site of the iconic 1969 (three day music festival) named after this artsy upstate New York hamlet. The actual Woodstock concert would eventually be held in Bethel, NY in August 1969. Highlights included Levon Helm Studios (closed) Bearsville Theater (world famous Todd Rundgren recording studio) and walking inside “Big Pink.” Actual home in Saugerties near Woodstock where Dylan & The Band recorded music. (i.e Basement Tapes) as well as The Band's debut album - Music From Big Pink. Nickname of the house they shared from 1966-1968. Unbelievable experience for this music junkie! Even Marie (never a Dylan fan) was quite impressed!
“By the time we got to Woodstock. We were half a million strong. And everywhere was a song. And a celebration.” ~ Joni Mitchell. #liveyourdash
Catskills Day #3. Hudson Valley River Trail.
Enjoyed early morning 14 mile anniversary bike ride on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail on the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge over the Hudson River between Lloyds/Highland and Poughkeepsie. Apple picking (Jenkins-Lueken Orchards) and shopping at country shops in New Paltz. Concluding with Sunday brunch at Garvan’s Gastro Pub located in a farmhouse dating back to 1759. Fantastic three days enjoying Ulster County, New York with friends. #liveyourdash
