2023
CHS ‘79 Boys Golf Reunion Weekend in Williamsburg, Virginia. Great golf, whisky, courses, food and conversation. Enjoyed 80 degree temperatures and some pretty fall foliage in late October. Hidden Creek, Colonial Heritage and Golden Horseshoe courses played. #liveyourdash #cherokee5 #wastedwedge

“At The Turn”
Leaves once green and vibrant nestled high in trees above these dog-legged golf holes full of life’s experiences and challenges are suddenly rust colored and aging having fallen onto the twisting fairways lying at my feet surrendering themselves to autumn’s cooler temperatures and fading sunsets.
The excitement of the front nine of our 30s has given way to the contentment of our final nine. Into our 60s, there’s no denying - we’re “At The Turn.”
Once proudly flushing newly purchased Pro Shop blades, we now cagily strike high numbered hybrids still intent on advancing our ball towards the pin waving cup of finality.
While our respective posted scores will be discussed for a few brief moments walking off number 18, it will be stories and ensuing laughs on the watering hole (number 19) that will live on for years to come.
Ask me about tasting “Pappy” Van Winkle 12 year old Special Reserve Kentucky Bourbon toasting my best friends after a round at Golden Horseshoe - Gold Course.
Over the past couple months, three of our kids have announced their engagements as well as chosen dates and venues to celebrate weddings planned for 2025 and 2026. Destinations in some instances chosen close to home filled with tradition and comfort, with some other places chosen farther from home filled with exploration and longing.
Similar milestones and decisions my friends and I have all once contemplated, planned, agonized and eventually celebrated with each other during the course holes on the scorecard labeled Out.
We now get a course designated “free drop” of fortuitous luck being able to relive some of those same cobwebbed memories from our youthful 30s (i.e. marriage planning) with our children during the course holes on the scorecard labeled In.
From this golfer’s perspective, and I think my lifelong cart mates will agree - right now, we are exactly where we should be.
Feeling some new aches and pains for sure, but also grateful to greet the our spouses (and maybe text our kids) at each new morning’s sunrise.
Blessed for the rounds that came before, we remain hopeful for a few more outings filled with likely lost balls and missed putts (of course), but also perhaps quite a few shots where our bad drives bounce into forgiving fairways and mishit wedges somehow carry those few extra yards over blind water hazards.
Shots like ones described above that mirror those fleeting moments in our lives when our hearts smile knowing we temporarily received an outcome better than we deserved.
Onward.
