Bonne journée Jimmy Buffett.
Happy Jimmy Buffett Day! Two years ago, Marie and I were hiking Shenandoah National Park, LDW when we got the news. This year we find ourselves exploring Quebec, enjoying the long holiday weekend with Lauren in tow. Just like old times!
We plan on following a few of the life philosophies Buffett promoted in song and lyric, through example and action during this trip.
Enjoy each other company’s. Toast the good days, learn from the bad days. Enjoy and respect nature. Be kind and curious, generous and forgiving. Travel to enjoy and understand new people, places and experiences. Promote humor and foster love during your journey.
The goal remains - “Some people never find it.
Some only pretend, but me? Hell, I just want to live happily ever after. Every now and then.” ~ JB
Excited to make new family memories at new latitudes and longitudes within this suddenly smaller world.
Night #1 highlights: Lodging at Le Chateau Frontenac. Located within the walls of the Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The hotel served as the meeting place for FDR, Churchill and the Canadian PM during WW2 political planning process. Lauren and I walked down the multiple wooden stairs descending into Le Petit Champlain and Lower Old Town. Climb back up was a decent cardio workout!
Famished from the flight we dined at Pub L’Oncle Antione. 17th-century brick cellar turned intimate tavern known for its classic onion soup, cheese plates, cream ale and maple whisky shooters.
The night concluded at Bar 1608 named after the year Quebec was founded. Located within Le Chateau Frontenac, we enjoyed midnight Last Call cocktails, breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and a late into the night Men’s U.S. Open tennis match that crossed into 8/30/25. Time for bed……

While my girls scheduled a spa day and High Tea experience, I walked along the Dufferin Terrace (aka Quebec Boardwalk) outside the Le Chateau Frontenac enjoying a short stroll complete with street musicians and artists, people watching and photography.
After the Saturday morning rain cancelled my planned cycling experience, we regrouped and walked through Vieux-Québec towards Lower Old Town and the cooperative area known as Quartier Petit Champlain. We made our way up and down winding cobblestone streets, down narrow flowered alleyways, past ivy covered brick restaurants and shops, past Umbrella Alley (Rue du Cul-de-Sac).
Enjoying drinks at Alphonse Cuisine & Cocktails we waited for the brief misting rain to subside. Even Marie got in on the festivities!
Dinner was at the lively Restaurant Parmesan. Transported to Italy we ate at small intimate tables while a French accordion player played Italian, French and even popular American tunes. For our table he played my requested “That’s Amore” (picture Moonstruck - Cosmo’s Moon) while the locals seated next to us got Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” causing the a huge restaurant sing-along.
As is tradition, Lauren and I closed the evening with a post-dinner pub crawl. Tonight’s challenge was being able to navigate the winding and hilly streets and alleyways of a new travel destination while imbibing on local spirits. We were up for the task at-hand.
Look for the Red Light at the unmarked building on Rue St. Paul and you will locate Justine. Named for a former Madame of an early 1900s brothel. Clara was an informative bartender as we talked about cocktails, hockey and jazz hoping to cross paths at Bar St. Angele for the Sunday House Band.
Next we enjoyed superbly crafted cocktails at Vieux Carré. Located within Bistro l'Orygine. We closed Saturday night at Neptune Joyau. A speakeasy consisting of three couches inside the Bleu Marine restaurant. We were Claude’s only guests as the Cinderella clock struck midnight turning Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Back at Le Chateau nothing beats Mary’s Carmel Corn (think: Johnson’s Carmel Corn from OCNJ) for the 1am drunk munchies. Shhhhhh…..Don’t wake up Marie!
