Berlin Day#3
Artsy Day, Hot Tub Sunset, Authentic German Food and our nightly Pub Crawl closed out three fun filled days in Berlin.
We enjoyed a short 3/4 mile hike through Hitler’s former hunting grounds and woods that led us to Teufelsberg (aka “Graffiti Hill”). American military forces conquered this area during WW2 setting up a communications base which was vital in turning the war in our favor.
Abandoned years later, it was turned into an area for street art and graffiti. Climbing to the top of the dome structures offered us perfect views of the morning Berlin skyline. Hundreds of murals covered these once important military structures.
We lunched on Museum Island at Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind (Translation: Tell Me Where the Flowers Are). Perfectly quaint bistro with delicious food and chocolate treats.
Next up was Dark Matter, a self-guided immersion experience where patrons walked room to room viewing various (interactive) themes and sensations set to soothing, techno and orchestral musical sounds.
We next explored RAW Gelände. A gritty urban center open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The area included both indoor and outdoor music venues, skate park, food trucks, more murals (of course) and beer gardens.
We headed next for our sunset hot tub boat experience (aka Badedampfer). Changing into our swimsuits and rash guards, we piloted an actual hot tub (boat) on the River Spree, enjoying drinks, music and a glorious sunset over Berlin. Great find - Lauren!
Dinner at an authentic German Restaurant - Brauhaus GEORGBRAEU. Braised pork knuckles and Sauerbraten a marinated and slow-cooked pot roast served w/ potato dumplings & red cabbage. Two types of beer: dark and light.
Lauren and I enjoyed Spreewasser (lemonade “Radler” beer) at Berlin’s oldest pub: Zur Letzten Instanz (est. 1621). Then our final drinks of the evening at Madame Claude – Former brothel, with upside down furniture and DJ spinning techno music upstairs and live music in basement.
This day was very special as Lauren and I enjoy taking mural photographs in and around Philadelphia recognized as the Mural Capital of the U.S. Berlin is also recognized as one of the top European cities for mural street art and graffiti. We’ve come full circle.
Time to publish that mural book, kiddo!
Thanks for the memories, Berlin!
Next stop, Bavaria, Munich.
