Bryce & Zion National Parks, Utah
Zion - Group hike Kayenta Trail to Emerald Pools. Zion Lodge Bridge closed so we waded across water. Sunset dinner at Rim Rock Lodge. #liveyourdash
Quiet reflective last hike, really just a peaceful stroll through Zion National Park near Zion Lodge and the Grotto Trailhead. Watching the early sun paint the mountainous canyon walls landscape like an artist paints a blank canvas. The Mighty Five is in the books. Heading for a quick night’s sleep in Las Vegas before catching an early morning flight home to South Jersey. What a time spent in Nature! #liveyourdash
Bryce - Want the good news or the bad news, first?
We started the morning at Bryce Point Summit ~ 8,300 feet, 35 degrees.
Everyone was stoked to hike Bryce Canyon.
Breakfast table chatter was - Which trails are you hiking? Are you starting at Sunset Point or Sunrise Point? What about Inspiration Point? AllTrails is reporting Wall Street is closed. Ironic as the DOW closed with a record 42,063 today!
Sunny cobalt skies, slight wind with the temperature finally topping out at a balmy 67 degrees at 5 O’clock Somewhere.
S&M chose Queens Garden / Navajo Trail Loop which included iconic Thor’s Hammer, Queen Victoria, Two Bridges and 3 nature made arches to walk through. Navajo switchbacks reminded us of Lombard Street, San Francisco. Per AllTrails - 3 miles, 652 elevation gain.
What’s that saying? Everything was going fine, until it wasn’t. Marie twisted an ankle about 1/3 of the way into the trek.
Three decades of hiking, her (our) first little mishap. In true Marie form, she gutted it out. No surfing for her tomorrow.
If you go, do the loop counter-clockwise. From Sunrise > Sunset Point. Desendjng views into the Bryce Amphitheater are absolutely incredible. You can thank me later.
Talking with the Travel GM tonight to see if we need to make a roster move as we still have five more days left Out West. We close with Zion National Park (#5) in three more days.
Not sure if I ever hiked a better trail or enjoyed a better day On Trail even given Marie’s slight misstep. Marie agreed. New travel itinerary in place per Mayo Clinic.
R - Rest
I - Ice
C - Compression
E - Elevation
While accidents are never part of the travel itinerary, we’re grateful for our shared experiences these past 5 days.
It’s been magical…..exploring the Mighty 5 and beyond.
“Come on take a little walk with me baby, and tell me who do you love? Who do you love?” ~ Delaware George Thorogood.
Signing off from the Bryce Canyon Lodge Urgent Care (just kidding).
More than just a T-shirt. We’re left with the stories we get to tell when we get home.
“Be a traveler, not a tourist.” Anthony Bourdain’s manifesto. “Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you.” ~ AB.
Thanks for the memories…..Ebenezer Bryce!
