Carolina On My Mind
“In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina. Can't you see the sunshine? Can't you just feel the moonshine? Maybe just like a friend of mine.” ~ James Taylor
When Lauren was invited to a Hilton Head Island wedding this spring…. Dad and daughter decided it would be the perfect time to visit a new destination together for the first time, as well as continue celebrating our #thisisus3060 - Trip around the Sun.
This would be our fifth such Road Trip destination during this magical travel year of 2022.
We laughed at the irony of heading South on 95 while our fellow Delaware Valley residents were welcoming the First Day of Autumn on Friday morning.
Listening to a playlist of our favorite songs, we split the nearly 730-mile drive to “Lowcountry” (aka Trench’s Island) located in Beaufort County discovered by the English Captain William Hilton in 1663.
After checking off some ‘touristy’ items on the travel itinerary; Island helicopter ride, mini-golf, requisite beach time, we did what we do best – Explored and photographed the island!
We attempted to live like the HHI islanders do!
We biked on the beach (first time!), explored Pickney Island Wildlife Preserve, walked around the artsy boutique stores on Calhoun Street in nearby Bluffton. Dad golfed (Atlantic Dunes Country Club) and together we explored Sea Pines Plantation (Stoney Baynard Ruins).
We biked to the Harbour Town Lighthouse and Salty Dog Café (South Beach). Both must do experiences! Dined at the Quarterdeck two stories up overlooking the beautiful Caliboque Sound.
Enjoyed drinks at the Skull Creek Boathouse followed by dinner and a glorious sunset at Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks. Later that evening we enjoyed drinks and live music at the Salty Dog Café and Tiki Hut at Beach House.
Daquiris and pizza at the chill Frosty Frog Café. Lazy morning breakfasts at Java Burrito Company and Nectar Farm Kitchen.
Lauren & I will typically plan a day-by-day itinerary with built-in free time to photograph and explore these first-time destinations. It's really neat that we not only enjoy the travel experiences, but the research and planning that goes into making these trips, so much fun!
Not gonna lie, it does take some time, but we are rarely if ever disappointed. And these 72 hours on Hilton Head Island were no exception.
One thing is for sure…..we’re both hoping our (Travel) Story Isn’t Over. Last photo.
