My image Elvis in Odell pictured here was selected for the Perkins Center for the Arts’38th Annual Photography Exhibition which exemplifies the best and most innovative work by photographers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
I met Henrik Bjorklund “My Swedish Road Warrior Friend” at the restored Standard Oil Station on Route 66 in Odell, Illinois. Henrik and 24 members of the Swedish Classic Car Club had vintage cars shipped from Sweden to New York City with plans to drive the cars from NYC to California on Route 66; starting in Chicago, Illinois and ending in Santa Monica, California just like my family.
Henrik pictured here is driving a fully restored 1959 DeSoto Fireflite. We exchanged travel itineraries before each of us went our separate ways on Route 66. Henrik was one of the many Route 66 enthusiasts I met on the 2,400 mile, 16 day journey across America.
The Exhibition runs from February 2 – March 24, 2019 at the Perkins Center for the Arts located at 395 Kings Highway, Moorestown, New Jersey 08057. Opening reception is Saturday, February 2nd from 1-4pm.

This weekend Dad and Daughter experienced the “Love Letters” Philadelphia Mural Tour. Riding the Market/Frankfort El (elevated train) through West Philadelphia from 45th to 63rd streets we viewed/photographed a series of “Love Letter” (murals) created by Steve Powers, former Philly native, now based in New York City. Powers who began his earliest work painting the streets of Dublin and Belfast, describes his work as a “letter for one, with meaning for all”.
Powers was inspirited by another local graffiti artist, Darryl McCray (aka Cornbread) born in Brewerytown, North Philadelphia who started ‘tagging’ (writing their nicknames on walls) in the late 60s. This trend eventually spread to New York City and led to the modern graffiti movement which reached its peak in the late 70s/early 80s.
Meanwhile, in 1984, Mayor Goode recruited McCray to join his anti-graffiti movement which led to the creation of the current Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is the largest in the nation. It was McCrays’ work entitled “Cornbread Loves Cynthia” which inspired Powers current project “Love Letters”.
With “Love Letters” Powers has created a series of 50 rooftop murals to express love from guy to girl, from artist to his hometown and local residents to their neighborhood of West Philadelphia. He considers the project “my chance to put something on these rooftops that people would care about.”
Our tour guide Ellen was fantastic!

On the day before the eve of his 78th birthday, I’m reminded of that John Lennon lyric, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Legacy ages and grows or dwindles and disappears as the years accumulate. Among many things, it is molded from experience, sacrifice, joy and disappointment. And then (if you’re extremely fortunate, as not everyone is) you suddenly wake up almost 6 decades later staring down your inception to date story. It is a story that will almost never reach the silver screen, but hopefully (and more importantly) it will touch all the meaningful lives that surround you every day in your very real world.
As night falls on the last hours of our weekend, I will ask…. What did you do this weekend to gather with friends? What did you do this weekend to move your projects, dreams and goals forward? What did you to do to foster compassion, kindness and love among the folks who crossed your path this weekend? What did you do to bring yourself inner happiness and contentment this weekend? What did you give of your time and skills to others in need? What did you do this weekend that your future self will thank you for?
What chapters will you add to your story before your epilogue gets published?

Yesterday, I came across a folder of yellowed and smudged newspaper clippings from the Philadelphia Inquirer dated 1989 – 1993 as Marie and I have recently begun purging our belongings to begin the process of downsizing from our current home.
In the spring of 1988, Marie and I had purchased our first home in Magnolia, New Jersey. We suddenly had a mortgage and no money. Each Sunday, after reading the Sports section, I would anxiously peruse the Travel section, taking special care to carefully cut and date articles that described with such vivid detail the allure of magical places within the continental US as well as exotic locations abroad. In this folder, I placed these clippings, dreaming of someday visiting these places with Marie.
In 1992, we were blessed with a daughter. My travel obsession ceased as my newspaper clippings found their way to the back of a bedroom closet as I suddenly had a more important priorities in my life.
In the interim, a quarter century quickly passed before my unbelieving eyes.
Uncovering them in storage, I smiled as I noted that me and my family were able to cross off; Sedona, California, Grand Cayman, Hawaii, the Grand Canyon and St. Thomas off the list, while Paris, Montana, Australia, London, Wyoming and China still remain outstanding.
Reading the tributes that have been pouring in concerning the sad and sudden death of Anthony Bourdain, I’ve been reflecting on the trips we’ve taken.
While the material items we brought back from our trips no longer fit, were eventually lost, broken or misplaced, it was the experiences that have stayed with us forever.
My family and I still talk about swimming with the stingrays in the Caymans, meeting our friendly tour guide Lucien in Bonaire, watching the sunrise over the Grand Canyon and the hospitality of the locals when our Jeep broke down at the Tidal Pools in Aruba.
So, thank you Mr. Bourdain, for showing this fellow native New Jersey Boy the value, meaning and importance of traveling outside my immediate zip code as well as traveling outside myself while exploring this great big beautiful and different world.
I learned you return home a changed and grateful human being. And that is certainly more important than any t-shirt or travel knick-knack.

]]>We sigh, “Oh well…another year in the books. Another chapter gets written.”
As aging Baby Boomers, we are once again permanently reminded of how our decades of choices made with regard to; healthy lifestyles, personal relationships, and money saved versus money spent determines our so called ‘lot in life’ as we wait for the New Year to begin. And how did we spend all those waking hours this past year? That one unknown commodity that remains a constant X Factor for all of us is time. How did we ‘choose’ to spend (or not spend) our time in 2017?
Regarding the above choices: Did we learn and grow or did we remain status quo and exist? Did we stretch and risk or did we remain stuck in the mud and only ‘dream’ of something bigger and better? Did we participate or did we watch?
And what about travel?
The items I mentioned above (money, time and health) all impact our ability, especially as we age to physically be able to travel. Whether it is traveling to see aging parents, college friends, distant family members, let alone all the cool (gotta see these places before I die) destinations from our respective Travel Bucket Lists.
What will you do in the coming year? And where will you go?
Wherever it is – Don’t regret travel!

Photo Backstory: Bryce Canyon National Park (2015). A family vacation found us in Las Vegas for the first time to celebrate my sister-in-law's 50th birthday and my niece's wedding! So what did my daughter and I decide to do with our down time? We decided to explore and photograph (4) National Parks; Bryce Canyon, Zion, Death Valley and Grand Canyon, located in Utah, California and Arizona respectively. I would do it all over again in a New York minute!
]]>Local artists submitted (950) images of which (80) images were chosen by AtlantiCare. My (2) chosen images included Wildflowers (pictured here) and Sunlit Ferns.
My recent ‘Call for Art’ submission was part of their construction and beautification project entitled Healing Arts Program which was started in 2003. The project uses classic and contemporary art creating a healing environment to reduce stress and improve the healthcare experience for patients, visitors and staff.
Wildflowers was photographed in Southern New Jersey, alongside the New Jersey Turnpike, inspired in part by the recent passing of Tom Petty, October 2017. Sunlit Ferns was photographed in Cuyahoga Valley National Park located south of Cleveland, Ohio, during a recent photography road trip with my daughter, Lauren Kern, this past summer.

]]>Breathe was inspired in part by a Jimmy Buffett tune entitled "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On". Buffett's song was written as a response to the folks dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It remains an important reminder for all of us, to keep breathing and moving forward, one step at a time. In the daily perseverance we can find strength. Just breathe.

Image shown here – Angels Are Always There found me while my wife and I were exploring the Rim Trail and Turkey Path at Colton Point State Park back in the fall of 2011.
A much needed couples weekend ‘getaway’ found us exploring Tioga County, Pennsylvania (aka The PA Grand Canyon) near Wellsboro, PA.
Our November weekend found us enjoying the fall foliage while hiking and biking the trails at Colton Point State Park. As an avid baseball fan and athlete in my younger days, I also fulfilled a long time dream to explore Williamsport, PA. Williamsport is home to the Little League World Series stadium and International World Series tournament each summer.
It was a fantastic R&R weekend of fitness, photography and escapism from the Rat Race of Life back in New Jersey!

Exploring America's Mountain at 14,000 feet.
Waking to our first glorious Colorado sunrise we headed south on I-25 towards Colorado Springs.
Destination: Pikes Peak, one of the state's 53 14,000 foot elevation mountains. Known as "14ers" to the native Coloradians.
From our car's window we viewed the nearby Garden of the Gods, a natural red rock formation millions of years old. We hope to explore this destination later this week.
Today, however our eyes were on the prize - Pikes Peak.
Before our driving assent we made sure we had plenty of water and snacks as elevation this high (nearly 3 miles above sea level) can affect people's bodies differently, including feelings of lightheaded and dizziness.
We stopped off at Big Foot Crossing to see if there were any visible signs of the mythical monster creature's existence. If he was here, we must have just missed him.
Next stop was Crystal Reservoir Visitor Center at 9,000 feet to take in the magnificent beauty of Pikes Peak off in the distance.
We enjoyed an epic snowball fight with the kids at Glen Cove about 11,000 feet elevation.
At the Bottomless Pit, we enjoyed rock climbing at nearly 13,000 feet. I began my assent slowly as this East Coaster was quickly feeling the effects of the higher elevations.
Hard core cyclists could be seen outside our car window, biking up the mountain seemingly defying nature and the limits of the human body.
Winding through the switchbacks, we arrived at the summit at 14,115 feet. Off in the distance Kansas was visible. Make sure you sample the legendary Voodoo doughnuts at the summit lodge. A true reward for all your hard work.
On our decent, we stopped off at Boulder Park and the Devil's Playground for once-in-a-lifetime photo ops.
Heading home we passed Santa's Workshop a commercial Winter Wonderland paying homage to Christmastime.
Make sure you stop off at the Pickle Shack for homemade pickle, jams and jellies for the ride home.
Exhausted but elated and thankful to have conquered my first 14,000 foot mountain. I’m a 14’er!

When most first time tourists arrive in The Meadows (aka Las Vegas) they are all set to explore The Strip or perhaps Old Las Vegas on Fremont Street; ready to eat, gamble and party the days and nights away. Since there is absolutely nothing in Vegas that cannot be had for enough money or time this seemed like The Plan. To lose yourself in the splendor, decadence and excess that defines Sin City seemed like the way to go. To escape the reality of a boring routine filled existence back home seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime.
However, Lauren and I had different a plan.
We looked at this trip as a unique opportunity over five days to visit four states, sample three vastly different and majestic national parks, with two cameras and one vision. To photograph Wild America! We reasoned when we returned nightly to the city from the desert we would have plenty of time to explore the bars and wedding chapels, chuckle at the Elvis impersonators and stand in awe at the man-made towers built in homage to the gods of Greed and Capitalism.

]]>Recently, a couple entered the art gallery where I was exhibiting, stopped dead in their tracks admiring the photo shown here. It was an old film canister with the exposed film ‘negatives’ stretched out and draped over a metallic crowd control barrier in New York City in front of Saks Fifth Avenue.
They quickly explained that their adult son was employed in the film industry and they felt that this particular photograph would be the perfect gift for his upcoming birthday.
I smiled.
I then proceeded to explain to this couple, that my daughter and I are photographers. We were in New York City for the day. It was a few weeks before Christmas. We had plans to enjoy dinner and a play together. This had become a recent Dad & Daughter - New York tradition. Before our evening festivities we planned to photograph Midtown. And that’s when this lonely and unassuming film strip found us.
They smiled.
And just like that, this photograph, my ‘temporary’ photograph suddenly became their (son’s) ‘permanent’ photograph.
There is quite simply no greater feeling that exists for an artist than to have his art (vision) connect with a total stranger.
And yes, I left my film canister hanging as if its very life depended upon it dangling from that cold metal railing for the next person to discover. Never once questioning why it found me…..
In the spirit of the Season, I was given a gift that I in turn then gifted to this couple and their son.

]]>Our next stop was Centralia, Pennsylvania, home to a devastating coal fire in 1962 which, some 50 years later, has turned the once thriving city into a modern day ghost town currently occupied by approximately 10 residents. Nearby is the Graffiti Highway, a stretch of abandoned asphalt that has turned into a cement canvas of spray paint expression. Photo included here.
Traveling the National Freeway (aka I-68) through parts of Maryland, we enjoyed the summer scenery as we drove through the mountain passes and stunning vistas. Opened in 1991, it travels east-west through Sideling Hill.
Just before sunset, we arrived at Historic Summit Inn located in Farmington, Pennsylvania along skyline drive. Established in 1907, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places once hosting Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
Watching the sun set over Uniontown, Pennsylvania, we gave thanks for a wonderful and safe journey.

“Route 66 Turns 90”
Scott & Lauren Kern (aka Dad & Daughter Photography) of Moorestown, New Jersey will be displaying selected photographs from their extensive collection of images captured driving across America on Route 66 during the summer of 2016 in the Medford Arts Center’s Gazebo Room from September 22nd through November 3, 2017.
Last year, marked the 90th Anniversary of Route 66 (aka The Mother Road) commissioned in November 1926. Flying to Chicago, Illinois, the Kern family rented an SUV and drove approximately 3,000 miles in 16 days, across 8 states (IL, MO, KS, OK, TX, NM, AZ and CA) eventually arriving in Santa Monica, California.
Scott Kern explains “We are photographers, part storytellers and part historians. Our job is to create a story that transcends time conveying the emotion embodied within the image at a particular point in time.”
For this project, the Kern father and daughter team chose unique images of “Americana” included lost but not forgotten motels, eateries, roadside attractions and national parks that defined road travel across America from 1926 to 2016.
The Route 66 collection will be exhibited at the Medford Arts Center (MAC) located at 18 North Main Street, Medford, New Jersey, 08055. Meet the Artists reception will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 6-9 pm.

So much has happened in my first year. I’ve traveled to some very cool spots in the world, met some fascinating locals, and along the way “experienced life versus collecting stuff”.
I’ve been very blessed to be in ‘good health’ exploring the world with my wife, daughter, family and friends by my side as I enter into my mid-50s. I’m so fortunate to have finally been able to start making some modest sums of money traveling and photographing the world these past 12 months.
As I begin Year #2, I’ve set some lofty goals for me and my business, along with some unique travel plans booked with family and friends for the remainder of 2017. In recent weeks, I’ve submitted travel articles (and photos) to travel outlets as well as continued to network my business with like-minded travel enthusiasts as I look to expand and develop my ‘Encore Career’.
Over the next few months, I will be adding travel photography images on this site from recent journeys to Bonaire, Las Vegas, U.S. National Parks (Death Valley, Zion and Bryce Canyon), Chicago, San Diego, Sint Maarten, Palm Springs, California and other travel destination locations over the past couple years.
Special thanks to my many friends (here) who networked and opened doors on my behalf allowing me to live out “The Dream”.
With much more still left to accomplish I feel like I’m on my way……

Albert Horner, a New Jersey native his entire life, has called Medford Lakes his home for the last 22 years. For the former army serviceman - turned sales representative for a large fishing tackle company based in North Carolina, the call of the outdoors has always been in his blood.
His primary objectives in this arena are twofold; to promote the stark beauty of this natural oasis, as well as garner public awareness regarding the current efforts by local organizations and businesses to potentially undermine the aesthetic magnificence of the Pinelands for personal, political and commercial gain.
“I think the best way people can get involved is to go out there and look at it, see it and enjoy it. People need to realize this is an once-in-a-lifetime deal and you’re not going to have this resource and if you don’t protect it. If you don’t learn to love it, you’re not going to care about it. When people get out there and appreciate it, they’ll see what they’ve got.”

This day, a performer was amusing children and adults with large soap bubbles. The gentleman next to the bike appears to be thinking out loud with a “bubble cartoon” over his head, while the little boy’s expression is priceless. Photo location: Central Park, NYC.

However, none of my close friends or immediate family members died during the past 12 months. Nobody in that same circle was given an irreversible and terminal diagnosis. Tallying up my own personal box score, I had a very good year. I had a number of close friends that were not so blessed. They cannot wait for this cursed year to end. They desperately seek redemption and a ‘new slate’ in 2017.
My wife and I did what married couples do with little fanfare. We rejoiced in our private moments of joy and worked together to face our public challenges. I watched from the sidelines as my daughter continued to grow and learn how the world around her works. She continues to amaze and inspire me. And yeah, my wifey ain’t too bad either! I’m undefeated (two and oh) in that game. Big W.
In other arenas, I continued to grow, stretch and risk. The result was small victories moving my photography and journalism businesses forward setting up my encore career; Scott 2.0. In particular, with regard to my writing I made some noticeable accomplishments this past year. Fake it, until you make it…huh, Lauren?
The funny thing about doing something for the first time and having some initial success, you suddenly think, “Why didn’t I do this earlier?” However, the other side of that coin is “Well, at least I finally started doing something that I previously only dreamed about and additional years were not lost.”
So rather than dwell on lost months or lost years of inaction, today I’m celebrating my many 2016 accomplishments. I’m setting goals for 2017. Time to raise the bar. Time to get on with this thing! I mean heck, I’m turning “55” in two weeks.
December always forces me to stop and take stock of where I’m at on that number timeline ‘thing’ from our grade school days. The confluence of the following annual events; end of the year, my early January birthday and my looming accounting ‘busy season’ are for me a welcome and necessary - Wake Up Call.
A life lived is a rare exception. Be that rare exception.
Be that vision of that best person, that potential reached person, that Super Hero that inhabits your mind just before you drift off to the cosmos each night.
I don’t believe in resolutions, but I do believe in working hard and smart to be a better me.
Own your life and make the next 12 months count.
Hopefully, I’ll live long enough to do just that as well as be able to post a golf score that equals ‘my age’. In that order….

Yes, I'll make a resolution
That I'll never make another one
Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun
Just enjoy this ride...

]]>I donated the following image entitled “Imagine” which is part of this years’ silent auction to raise much needed funds for the organization. My photograph was taken in Central Park, New York City, in the area of the park known as Strawberry Fields, which serves as place for reflection and serenity honoring the one time NYC resident, John Lennon.
